Starlit Destiny
Chapter Six
The look of intense concentration on her face was downright comical. Every muscle in her face was tense, her brow
was furrowed, her nostrils flared, her lips pursed up even though she nervously chewed on her lower lip. In fact, every
muscle in her body was tense.
Her attempt at piloting was more turbulent than the current they rode. Talk about a crazed acrobat. Since she had taken
over, they had zigzagged three kilometers and progressed one. Krys had never seen someone try so hard, yet fail so
miserably.
You re overcompensating on each turn, you have to relax, he said. Trying to be helpful, he reached over and grasped
her shoulder, rubbing his thumb against a tight muscle. The gesture seemed to make her even more nervous, so he
removed his hand.
I am relaxed, she said through clenched jaws.
Jaret interrupted. The controls are very sensitive.
Primitive as I am, that much is obvious, she said, not taking her eyes from the viewscreen before her. A gentle
uprising on the ocean floor came into view in the distance. She banked the Jurate violently to the right.
What are you doing? Krys asked. They swung back the other way so hard she was about to roll the ship over. See
what I mean by overcompensating.
I was avoiding flying into that underwater mountain.
Oh, Krys said. Watch out for that one.
Where?
He pointed at a distant uprising on the ocean floor. When she realized he was teasing her, she breathed deep, flexing
her nostrils. I ll lock you in the hold. Her voice was ragged. How can I concentrate with you two criticizing my
every move? She reached over and patted his knee. It s you two that need to relax.
Relaxing was somewhat difficult when she didn t immediately remove her hand from his leg. He studied her, watched
the tension ease from her body. How was it that when she touched him--which come to think of it was often--she was
at complete ease with herself? But when he touched her--which wasn t quite often enough--she shivered like a yeddi
in a snowstorm? He grinned. Dena wanted to be in control. He would have to remember that. He would be more than
happy to give her free reign. I--
Darian, shut up, Jaret insisted. One back seat navigator is enough.
Krys decided Jaret was right and was proud he lasted the next two minutes without uttering a single syllable. To put it
mildly, he had wanted to. They way her hand was still on his thigh, her fingers moving from time to time, arousing
him--that deserved some comment. And now that she failed to recognize they were losing headway ... wouldn t it be
an opportune time to show her how to accelerate again? His stubborn streak flaring, Krys decided to follow Jaret s
directive.
A minute later she turned and gaped at him. We already passed that outcropping on the left.
Did you press any levers?
No!
Well, you should have. Krys reached over and slid the throttle forward until they once again moved forward.

Starlit Destiny
Oh, yes. I remember. She looked down at the throttle, and a mischievous look of discovery hit her face as she gazed
at him. She took her hand from where it still rested on his thigh and wrapped those delicate fingers around the throttle.
He reached over and removed her hand, replacing it on his thigh.
Predictably, she snatched her hand away and grasped the Jurate s controls tightly.
Before Dena could open her mouth, he cut her off. Don t even think about it. You have to crawl before you can run.
What? she asked, innocently, her lashes fluttering against her cheeks. She was a gutsy little spy.
You don t need to be going any faster than this.
I am flying much better, she said, turning away sheepishly. You have to admit that.
Oddly enough, Krys was surprised how quickly she was learning. As if to prove herself, she accurately predicted when
the underwater wind died down and throttled back to compensate. Then, when another blast hit, she accelerated
smoothly into it. She hadn t flown in a straight line. But she banked and turned in perfect tune with the invisible
current.
He looked back at Jaret, whose mouth was open with astonishment. She s better than you. Jaret mouthed the words,
near silently.
Krys glanced at her, the corner of her full lips turned up ever so slightly. She d heard. Now that was annoying.
Admittedly, she seemed to have an innate ability. But she also seemed to have some magical ability to control the
elements. She definitely wasn t a better pilot. Look who s talking. You couldn t pick up any readings on the Nav
either.
Danette, Jaret said. How are you doing this?
Dena, she said. Dena et Lyksandr. Simply put, Dena the Lyksandr.
Not allowing her to change the subject, Krys repeated Jaret s question. When she still didn t answer, the two of them
bombarded her with questions until she finally said. Your language doesn t allow for full description.
Well, try, Jaret said.
Yeah, try, Krys seconded.
Will you share with me your full names?
She has a point there, Jaret said.
This is different, Krys said. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
